    When your device is extremely compact, you might be looking for a high-power, single-chip SWIR LED package with a smaller footprint. Of course, Ushio would not want to compromise the high-power offerings from our flagship Epitex SMBB range, so our Kyoto-based engineers were tasked with developing the EDC family.

    The unique strength of surface-mounted EDC packages is the reduced footprint, which uses 46% less space on your circuit board than an SMBB SWIR LED. This gives your engineers some breathing room for more LED packages or other components. While offering the same wavelength range as SMBBs, the footprint of an EDC package measures just 3.45 mm x 3.45 mm. Yet, a single 1 mm² chip is all that is necessary to remain capable within the same applications as single-chip SMBBs.

    Despite being so small, EDC packages still take efficient heat management into consideration. EDC bases are constructed from ceramic material, instead of plastic, and serve as an ideal heatsink while providing reliable isolation from the circuit.

    Spanning SWIR wavelengths from 1050 nm to 1650 nm, EDC LEDs are produced in standard increments of 100 nm. For applications that require sensory data to be collected, any of the three chip berths can easily accommodate a photo-detection chip instead.
